LIFESTYLE AND CULTURE IN VENDA

Lifestyle and culture concerning the Vhavenda people in Limpopo Province.

In Venda life begins in rural areas where we find different types of life style being practiced. Venda people are rich in cattle, sheep and goats and this mean wealth to them, and agriculture is one of the lifestyle that vendas are proud of. Limpopo is full of all type of fruits and vegatables, such as Mango, Guava, Avocados, Tomatoes and Bananas. Limpopo produce tea at Tshivhase and Phiphidi tea plantation. So this is the one of the great agricultural benefits because the Midi tea is very cheap in Limpopo. Everyone in the rural villages plays a different role,for example; male are responsible for building houses,taking care of the live stock and ploughing and on the other side women focuses on harvesting work and household related work. polygamy is still common in Venda because of the prosperity of farmland activities. fewer man will leave the village and go and work in the mines and the rest will stay behind because their focus is on farming.

There are different traditional dresses that are found in Venda. Venda wore clothes made from skin of animals that were obtained when they were busy hunting. This clothes were believed to be scared as Venda people believe in ancestors. women wear necklace which is made of string of beads and this beads are associated with ancestral spirits. women also wear traditional dress called Minwenda, Tshideka,Shedo,Tsindi and Gwana. They also wear what we call Makunda which is found in their legs as a round strings made from soft wires. Girls wear different attire from women. All this dresses are classified as Venda tradional attire. For men is different story because they wear shirts and trousers that are made of different colours of Venda cloth.

From the child birth, children wore a string of cotton which is called Ludede and is found in their waist up until they can reach a stage to wear Tshideka.Tshideka and Shedo are worn by girls up until they reach puberty stage and from there they will wear Tsindi. This type of clothes only cover the private part in girls and the rest of the body is left without anything covering it. All this attire are unique to Venda people.

Venda language is part of Bantu or Nguni class of languages and is also associated with Niger and Congo languages. The language is referred as Tshivenda or Luvenda, and is one of the 11 official language found in South Africa. Tshivenda speaking people live in the Northern part of Limpopo Province. Around the Venda speaking people in Limpopo there are different kingship leaders, and this flow from the blood line. For one to become a king, the mother must be from the royal family. When it comes to marriages one must marry from the royal family not the commoners. This give more chance to those who are born in that royal family to compete for the seat of being a king or chief.
