RITUALS AND TRADITIONAL DANCES IN VENDA
Today i am going to focus on the rituals and traditional dances that took place in Venda. As venda people we are proud of being vhavenda, because there is lot under this term called vhavenda. In Limpopo there are bapedi, batswana, batsonga and many more cultures, but we as vhavenda have our own unique way of doing things. So today i am going to elaborate more on that issue.
First of all will start with what we call Rites of passage, this refers to the rituals and initiations that took place. We have boys who go for what we call circumcision (mula or murundu in Venda). All this is to prepare boys for manhood in their lives. Boys from the age of 10 to 18 years undergo this initiation as they are old enough to take responsibility for their lives. This rituals prepares this young man to respect the woman and be able to take care of their families. This practice is conducted by a traditional healer and the royal house of such village.

For girls there is three different types of initiation that took place, the first one is called musevhetho this for the young girls and we also have vhukomba and this is for young girls who are in puberty stage and lastly we also have Domba which is for the big girls, those who are ready for marriage as this ritual prepares them for marriage related matters. All this types of ritual they are there in order to teach young women the proper way of behaving and how to take care of their husbands and children's. This part of rituals are conducted by old ladies and those who have been there before.

There are different types of dances that are performed in Limpopo but here we will be focusing on Venda traditional dances. The most important dance is called Tshikona. This type of dance is performed by boys from the age of 12 years and upwards. This dance is most performed when there is a function, gathering or ceremony in the royal house. This is done in honoring your chief as the owner of such land you are living in. This dance involve more than 20 participant in order for it to be a success.

There are other types of dances such as Tshigombela, Malende and Tshifasi. This three type of dance is performed by girls, mature women and boys do perform In all this dances girls and boys make a circle and other will be beating drums to make music.girls wear traditional clothes(minwenda) when performing this dances. all of this dances are made in order to celebrate the heritage of Vhavenda people and to unite them.
